A Pause
Hey folks, going to jump right in tonight.
A Quick Pause
I have made the difficult decision to pause current and new shipments for a minimum of one week, with a small possibility of extending the period to 10 days.
I feel that there are some baseline usability issues that must be resolved before I feel confident in the quality of the units hitting the ground. My goal is not to hit "perfection" as Mugsy will continue to improve as time goes on while in user's hands. My concern is for these usability issues to be an immediate deal breaker for some of our backers. I would hate for people to finally get their hands on Mugsy and think "this thing sucks".
The things I want to fix/improve are the following:
Initial system setup and configuration
Build manual
Hardware API functionality
Recipe creation tools and stock recipe improvements
I have discussed this decision with the core user group on the Discord channel. One of the points brought up was that, as hackers and makers, they are totally ok with Mugsy needing updates and improvements after delivery. The issue for me is that a large percentage of Mugsy backers are not makers/hackers and expect Mugsy to work like any other coffee machine they could have picked up at Target.
This distinction between user types may provide an opportunity for me to keep shipments running while working through the above list. For users who are cool with some bugs and tinkering, shipments can flow. We can then hold only the ones for backers who want these issues resolved before receiving their unit.
I am not 100% sure this "partial pause" scenario will be possible so I will be investigating the options on Monday/Tuesday. I will be sending out an update then with more info on how to proceed if it is a workable solution.
This decision was not an easy one to make. My goal is not to keep working towards an unrealistic ideal, but only to give Mugsy the best chance of succeeding and making our users happy.
I accept that some of you will not be happy with this decision and I will gladly refund your purchase if you are not interested in waiting any longer. Just shoot me an email at matt@heymugsy.com and I will process your request.
This "pause period" will be completely open and I will be sharing details, timelines, code and todo lists with the core user group on the Discord channel and in blog/KS updates . I will be leaning on the community a bit more than usual over the next several days for help with testing, documentation and a healthy dose of aggressive project management.
OK, thats all I have on that for now. I will have another update with more specific details on the workload on Monday or Tuesday.
Build Manual
Although we are not 100% complete, I have made a ton of progress on the manual. It will be available as high detail renders as well as an easy to print line version. About 70% of the imaging is complete. On top of that I need to add the instructional copy overlays.
Here are some examples of both styles from the working copy:
I am dumping everything into the Scratch folder in the Build Manual directory of the main Github repo. You can find it here: https://github.com/margyle/MugsyDev/tree/master/buildManual
Keep an eye on that folder for frequent updates. Once the remaining images are completed I will be compiling it into the final doc.
OK, that is all for tonight. I appreciate all of the support and advice I have received over the last couple of days while sorting all of this out. I look forward to sharing more info in the next update, going out Monday or Tuesday.
Cheers,
-m
