Hi Pi!

Hey Folks hope all is well! Just a couple of things to go over today.

Pi 4

The Raspberry Pi Foundation just announced the release of the Pi 4. On top some pretty significant processing and memory improvements, it fixed some common complaints about the Pi's design(so long, shared USB and ethernet).

Specs:

  • A 1.5GHz quad-core 64-bit ARM Cortex-A72 CPU (~3× performance)

  • 1GB, 2GB, or 4GB of LPDDR4 SDRAM

  • Full-throughput Gigabit Ethernet

  • Dual-band 802.11ac wireless networking

  • Bluetooth 5.0

  • Two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports

  • Dual monitor support, at resolutions up to 4K

  • VideoCore VI graphics, supporting OpenGL ES 3.x

  • 4Kp60 hardware decode of HEVC video

  • Complete compatibility with earlier Raspberry Pi products

Pretty.

Pretty.

I have one on backorder but I'm not sure when it will arrive. Until then, I wont have much to say about what updates will be required to integrate it into Mugsy. It will be compatible, just might need to adjust some service management in addition to using the new drivers/OS. For now, the 3B+ will continue to be the standard Mugsy controller.

Bad Bad Bots

Over the weekend, our support ticketing system was slammed by a spam bot attack and had to be taken offline for several hours. Although I have resolved the issue, I was pretty unimpressed with my service providers inability to mitigate the attack or provide any basic utilities to clean up after it.

I will be switching providers this week. If you have a ticket history(closed or open) with the previous system, you may receive an email after I import the DB alerting you to the new reply links.

I lost a day's work to this, so this so am a bit behind on uploading Mugsy OS. I will be completing this tonight/tomorrow.

Grind Size Image Recognition

I had some hopes of using a tool like OpenCV to analyze coffee ground size in real time but it looks like it is quite a difficult nut to crack. I think there are definitely some workarounds but the task requires too much time and brain cycles for me to work on at this point in Mugsy's development.

I would still love to hear peoples thoughts/ideas/tips about this on the forum. Analyzing size and distribution of overlapping particles has some serious implications in healthcare and the sciences. Using it for brewing coffee does seem a bit silly but that won't stop me from hacking some big brained scientist's breakthrough discovery once they make it!

Huh?

Huh?

Shipping

Im back to packing boxes! Units will start going out tomorrow.

A Couple of Extra Units

We had a couple of order cancelations and non-pays so there are a few more available units. I'll be opening up the preorder form today or tomorrow for a very short window. These units will not ship until August.

OK, thats all for now. Next update will be on Thursday.

Cheers,

-m
